The spirit of sauna
The tiles fairies, hope, bad- and good-luck are designed for the international sauna project in 2024.
I approached the sauna project from a spiritual perspective. I was researching what spirituality has meant historically and what it means today in relation to the sauna.
The spiritual aspect of the sauna is emphasized by the belief in a fairy or spirit residing in the sauna. If treated well, the spirit took good care of the sauna and the people bathing in it. Unsuitable behavior made the spirit angry and could cause the sauna to burn down.
Finns the sauna has been major place for bathing and recreation. It is place where Finns have been brought in this world, where the body and soul have been healed, and where spells have been spun. Today, it is a place where Finns wash away stress and strain, in preparation for the weekdays and holidays.
Divination no longer takes place in the sauna today, but people's futures are predicted using playing cards. I brought the symbols of the cards and the fairies into the sauna in the form of tiles in a humorous way.
